Attended the London Java Meetup last night
I attended my first Java Meeup last night at Smiths of Smithfield, a cool little bar near Farringdon that's just around the corner from my old office. There are 29 people signed up on the London Java Meetup site although there were only 6 of us that actually turned up. Still, the meetups aren't that well publicised (IMHO) and this is (I think) the first or second one that has actually happened.
Basically it was a great excuse to drink beer and talk techie, although it never really got too geeky. Topics ranged from Java (of course), IDEs, aspects and open source to the state of the market and current projects. There was even some reminiscing of days gone by where the guys used to program with punch-cards and green screens. As somebody that started their professional career with PowerBuilder, I just couldn't help feeling young!
Overall it was a good night and I look forward to seeing everybody at the next one.
