Looking Glass demo

Looking Glass Sun's Looking Glass project was demoed in the general session this morning and it's absolutely amazing. I'd not seen it before and it's basically a 3D desktop environment written in Java. Windows can be transparent and can be spun around in 3 dimensions. It's also very fast.

I guess my whole question to a 3D desktop is why? It seems pointless to me no matter how cool it is. I would prefer that whatever resources something like that is eating up be used for something, like, say, anything else? :)
