2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Airport ExpressAfter a couple of weeks delay, my Airport Express finally turned up. As with all Apple kit, the packaging is great and the contents consist of the Airport Express unit and plug, installation CD and user guide. That's it. Whack the CD in the drive to install the AE configuration software and a few minutes later you are asked to reboot your Mac/PC.

So far so good but now it all went a bit pear-shaped for me. In theory you're supposed to be able to run the Airport Express Assistant that gets installed into /Applications/Utilities. Following the steps, it asks you whether you'd like to create a new network or connect to an existing one. Since I already have a wireless network I opted for the latter. The problem here is that my wireless network didn't show up. I see my neighbour's (really should tell them about that one day!) but not mine. Hmmm. I click back and next a few times to refresh the list and still nothing. After a switch back to my wireless network (from the Airport Express default network) I do a Google, only to discover that this seems to be fairly common. Basically, the assistant software isn't picking up my network because it's running with WEP.

Plan 2 - use the Airport Admin Utility that is installed next to the assistant software. This tool gives you the ability to search for Airport base stations on your network and configure them. Well, the express is not yet on my network so I switch my Mac to use the default express network and rescan for base stations. Hurary! The express pops up and I can open the window to configure it. Essentially, the admin utility lets you manually setup the stuff that happens behind the scenes with the assistant. Just as when you connect to an existing WEP-enabled wireless network, the admin utility lets you enter the name of the network and the password/passkey. Great. Click Update and wait for the express to restart. Fire up iTunes. Look around iTunes for any indications of AirTunes. Nothing. Go back to the express user guide. Scan the guide and pick up a tiny bit at the back that says you should choose your express from the speakers popup. What? Where's that? Back to Google and I find the AirTunes page has a screenshot with the popup. Check iTunes version is 4.6 - yep. Restart iTunes. Nothing. Hmmm. Read express user guide again. Unplug express from power and plug it back in again. Status light goes green, then amber, then flashes amber. Look in user guide - amber light means there is a problem with my ISP. Great, thanks for that useful insight, Apple.

So far I'm about an hour in and still nothing. Next I decide to check whether the express works by using the assistant to create a new network. Oh, the assistant doesn't see the express anymore. In fact, neither does the admin utility. Oh, that's because the express can't join a network. Hunt round the house for a staple and force a reset by holding the reset button in for a few seconds. Express restarts and the default network is back again. Follow assistant and after a few minutes I restart iTunes with my new network. Speaker popup appears! Choose the express and enter password. Error - express isn't plugged into any speakers. Very true - it isn't (how do they know that?!). Dig out cable, plug into line out and amplifier kicks into action. Hurray, the Airport Express works but I have to switch networks, which means I can't do anything like surf or get e-mail while streaming music.

Plan 3 - try the admin utility again. Reset express. Reboot mac. Join default express network. Start admin utility and scan for base station. Choose configure from the menu and ask the express to join an existing network. I've had problems with WEP passwords before so I decide to enter the full hex value. Click to update the express and the status light goes green to amber to flashing amber again. Hmmm. Perhaps the hex password needs to be prefixed with 0x. Restart admin utility and no express. Here we go again. Grab staple, reset express, rejoin default network, rescan, reconfigure and enter new password. Ditto the status light story. Time for Google again. Oh, perhaps the hex password needs to be prefixed with $. Admin utility doesn't see express. Grab staple...

Restart express and mac. Status light green to amber to flashing amber. B*llocks. More Googling followed by the Airport Express forum. Read that lots of other people are having grief with WEP. Read about prefixing with 0x. Read about prefixing with $. Scroll through a few pages. Read about people moaning about DHCP not working. Hmmm. Grab staple, join default network, open admin utility, configure base station, prefix password with $, go to Internet tab and enter static IP address information (see screenshot). Click to update express. Status light goes green, stays green, I try not to look away, light stays green! Quickly boot up iTunes and I can see it in the speaker popup. Damn, by now I've moved the express so that's it sitting next to me to poke the reset button easily. Unplug power and move next to the amplifier. Plug back in. Hold breath while express starts up. Green light again! Choose express from iTunes and at last we have music!

Airport Express, static IP config

I can safely say that setting this thing up is a pain in the a*se. Now it's working, it works a treat. Very cool but more "plug and pray" than "plug and play".

PLEASE HELP -- Airport Express only

I purchased an Airport Express. I want to connect it to my stereo so I can play music from my computer wirelessly (instead of using a monster cable from my computer).

However, the Airport SetUp application only describes connecting to a new Airport "Base Station".

I was told that you do not need a base station -- that an Airport Express can work by iteself. Is this incorrect?

If Airport Express does work by itself, how can I configure it?

hopefully this will alleviate some stress...and swearing!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I bought an AirPort express - plugged it in opened AirPort Utility and added a few settings relative to my network and it was all go in about 30mins. Was so simple my 8 yr son could have done it.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

yeh like I spent 3 hours trying to get my new AE to work without the blinking light. Gave up and unplugged it! Want to throw it out the window. My 10.4.11 version mac didn't even have the AE program on it. So I had to download it. I'm about to start from scratch and ask my IT expert neighbour to give me a hand. Maybe I should borrow your 8 yr old??

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Any chance you could get your son round here because Im 5 hours into it; 5 resets of ae and modem and reconfigurations, green light once and flashing amber again. Seriously going nuts over this product.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

yes, no challenge for an 8 year old. got mine hooked up in 10 mins....been using apple for 3 days. don't make it tougher than it is....

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Hi Simon, I just purchashed an Airport Express to replace my Linksys. I'm not computer literate @ all. Do you have any suggestions to make the transition painless? The reason I'm replacing the Linksys is.... I had my wireless printer connected for months and lost connection. After trying again and again my nephew suggested it my be may router and I should try the Airport Express. Now that I have it I'd appreciate your suggestions. (I have a Dell Vista). Thank you....Jim

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Good job Simon. I'm a network/computer professional and it gave me problems too. I don't know how many resets I did on my units. The printed directions for resets were wrong. Both units had out of date code. I set up 2 in a separate unsecure network but am going to go with a wired ethernet profile since my microwave interferes with reception. That "$" fix ticks me off since you shouldn't have to seach the net for critical info like that.

4 hours to setup Airport Express!

I spent 4 hours the first time I set up our express. The solution for us was to change WEP to WPA personal, that seemed to do the trick. I am no technology wizard and I quickly forgot everything I learned. 6 months later my son reconfigured some Mac settings and it no longer worked. I remembered the first time I got it working , how much research and experimenting and diagnosis it took, and couldnt bear the thought of going through the learning curve again. So, for the next 8 months my wife would peroidically ask, " can you get that airport working so we can listen to Itunes on the stereo" and I would cringe and explain why I coulnt do it. Then my wife asked for me to fix it as a Christmas present to her , and I couldnt refuse. After another 2 hours screwing around, my Mac still wouldnt see any airport express. I treid many things and finally put it back in the box. Then a brainstorm hit: I hooked up the airport via ethernet cable to our iMac. The damn thing saw it right away. I configured it to use the correct network (we have 2) and via WEP, the light turned green! Plugged in into the stereo and it worked. What I dont understand is why this time around WEP worked, and last time, changing to WPA did the trick. I blame apple for not having a set process to diagnose and repair despite these issues happening widespread since at least 2004, as evidenced by posts on the web. Next time I will google this post so I can remember what to do.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I've had an airport express for a few years and it's worked great. Moved into a larger house so I bought a second one for a second stereo. Just using it to stream music not surf the web. Set it up with Apple tech support and have been having chronic speaker cut out. Any ideas why this is happening? Driving me crazy!!!! Thanks.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I get this when my wireless network is busy, for example when I'm using Time Machine/Capsule over wifi.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Thanks so much for that post Simon! I was ready to tear my hair out when the AirPort utility kept changing my modem settings so I could no longer connect to it or to the AirPort Express. With your help, it's all now under control :-)

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I just got finished setting up an Airport Express to wirelessly run music from my computer to my stereo. I have a PC w/ Windows XP and a Linksys WRT54G Router. I tried may things and finally got it going. The info/responses here were greatly helpful, but the $ string w/ WEP, or WPA Personal didn't end up working for me. I had to go with WPA2 Personal. The simple process that worked in the end was this: **1) Go into router setup and change security to WPA2 Personal w/ AES Algorithms. **2) Connect ethernet cable from wireless router to AE **3) Connect stereo cable from receiver to AE (or a portable stereo since you will need to have to airport express hooked to computer via ethernet for setup.) **4) Plug AE into wall (reset if necessary by holding reset button until blinking fast amber.) **5) Open airport utility software and click on manual setup button (lower left): - Under Airport/Airport Express page: a) set Airport Express Name, if desired. b) set password. - Under Airport/Wireless page: a) set wireless mode to "join a wireless network". b) under network name select the name of your wireless network. c) under wireless security select "WPA2 Personal" and enter your shared key. - Under Airport/Music page: a) select enable airtunes. b) name your speakers and set speaker password, if desired. (no changes needed to airport/internet setup pages.) - Select update in the lower right. You should be good to go, just unplug the ethernet cable, move to desired location, hook up to stereo... BTW, it also worked with no wireless security setting. Good Luck!!!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Mysteriously for me, none of Simon's tips worked. I then read the comment above and decided to try it. Works great! Better still, it worked out being even easier for me. I didn't even have to use the ethernet cable. All I did: 1) Configure router and Mac to WPA2 Personal, using the AES option and NOT the TKID for password. 2) Then, hard reset the AE, pressing the reset while plugging in. Look for the quick flashing green - that means it hard-reset. It will then go through its usual bootup - long amber followed by flashing amber. Don't panic yet! 3) With the hard reset done, AE should show up in Airport Utility with factory settings. In Airport Utility, I just followed instruction to "Join a wireless network," setup the security (no mention of AES or TKID here), then saved. 4) Wait for the restart, watching in terror as the amber flashes a couple of times... 5) ...then rejoyce as the sight of green! All works well, and my wifi is secure. I even rebooted the wireless router few times, as I sometimes would to coax life back to the network, and the AE is still green. Thanks, Simon and Anonymous!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

oh i can beat your timeline ... 3 full days... thus far... it used to wor like a charm back in our previous home... back when we used to use WEP encryption... now our Netgear wireless setup is wpa2 personal I can get thru the entire setup, while connected via ethernet... then i take AX out plug into AV system... plug into outlet... and all i get is blinking yellow.....

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Greetings from California! Found this link on google trying to set up my Airport Express. I reckon reading your blog entry saved me a couple of hours! First attempt to extend existing network failed and the '$' in front of the 128 bit hex key did the trick!! Thanks again!!

You're welcome

I'm glad it saved you all the hassle that I went through! :))

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express

I have a g3 iBook upgraded to 10.3.8 and just bought AE.I made a huge mistake in using Airport Setup Assistant from the Utilities folder.I could access the Internet no problem but could not see the remote speaker pop-up in iTunes.Hours and hours and a day later I found this site http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044 which showed me how to reset the Airport Express to the Factory Default.Next I just plugged everything in(by the way I did no restarts or anything to the iBook). The Airport Card found the Wireless Network all by itself and I just selectd it and then I opened iTunes and lo and behold, there was the pop-up menu......yeeeeehaw.It works like a dream, highly recommend it. You can now roam all over the house with the iBook and stay connected!!!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express from Billy McKeown

Just wanted to corroborate Billy's story with my own. I followed Billy's advice and did a factory reset and - hey presto! the airport express works fine. Interestingly, my device is secondhand, 2 months old and had been "configured" for me by my lovely friend. Unfortunately, whilst my Mac recognised the device and told me i was connected to the internet and the green light was on.......it didn't work!!!! But now it does! Hooray!

You're welcome

Yep. Adding a "$" before the 128 WEP in the advanced part of the AirPort Utility connected the Express to my Linksys Wireless (Windows XP). Many thanks. How Apple expected me to figure this out is another story...

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Thanks Simon, you are the Mother F!@#ing Man. Luckily I only spent about a 1/2 hour on it before finding your well crafted instructions, BUT added onto the two days I have spent trying to get my HP Printer, d-Link Router, and FIOS network to be secure and all talk to eachother peacefully is another story. Plus I stubbed my dam toe.. OUCH! Anyway, I think that Static IP info worked and adding the "$" before my password also seem to have helped. I guess now I can throw away my paper clip since it will be some years before I have to research this whole thing again when it all goes down.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Wow!! You had more determination getting it setup than I did. I pretty much gave up on having it on my existing network. After reading your blog though I am once again determined to get this thing working without switching networks back and forth.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

We can top it with a whopping four hours. Including updating our Cisco AP and trying each and every setup strategy.

In the middle none of our Powerbook would connect anymore due to problems with the Ciscos Web-Interface (what we learned later)

Learned a lot about Cisco and Apple quality, about a "$" being better than "0x" since changes are always good and about all the different styles and some funny bugs in Mac OS WEP password interfaces. Listening to music now.

After reading your blog and disabled DHCP, which was the problem and the fact we didn't want to believe.

Used a ballpen, though.

Thanks
-Stefan

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Bless you for posting this. I was ready to return this damned thing. Problems, as you summarized are that WEP requires $ in front of string, and IP address has to be manually assigned after disabling DHCP. For the record, my setup: Win XP Pro, Netgear WGR614.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Judging by the number of referers that I get from Google with searches for Airport Express setup information, I think a lot of people are having difficulties. Apple should be ashamed for putting together such a pathetic user guide!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I'm not sure I'm following. What were the steps that worked? My failures are similar but I'm not following the steps that worked. I tried to return this to Softbuyweb after the Apple store "genius"es said that the airport express wouldn't work with my netgear router.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

First posts here are from 2006... 2007... now 2009 - and I still have to google for the magic $. Thanks so much simon.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Thanks for the tips. I was able to use an ethernet cable and DHCP to get the AX on the network. Then I typed the ip I KNEW it got frmo DCHP and the default password into the 'Other' selection of the Airport Admin tool.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Simon, Okay, so I'm an idiot, but I spent all day (e.g. > 8 hrs) trying to configure AirPort Express from both Windows XP and Mac OS X. I was just about to give up, when I Googled the page on on your 2 hour exploits. Following in your footsteps, I was finally able to get the speaker popup window to appear in both my PC and MAC iTunes applications. For the record, I'm using static IP addresses with a Linksys WAP54G with 128 bit WEP, and the secret is the "$" preceding the hex passphrase. Also, it seemed to work best when I used the assistant first (which changed my Mac TCP/IP settings to DHCP), and then use the AirPort Admin Utility to configure a static IP address for the AirPort Express unit. Thanks, Simon!!! -- Joe

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Hey all!!! Apple released an update for the Express. Version 4.0.1 has a fix for all the third party connection troubles. I just tried it out and worked flawlessly. I initially had setup two wireless networks but I went under the Airport Admin Utility, changed the Express network so it would join my existing Dlink network, entered the WEP key (didn't require the "$") and voila!!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Excellent - thanks for letting us know! :-)

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I checked first for all the applicable updates (6.1.1 firmware for Airport Express, 4.1 for Airport admin), but still had to jump through all these hoops (disable DHCP, configure DLink DI-524 for static address, $ before password). Whatever, my Powerbook G4 is now playing through the Express. Lose the connection intermittently and have to restart iTunes. Sigh. And I haven't even started with the Win XP laptop yet. So, don't count on the updates to save you these headaches. Good luck!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I won't say how long it took me to figure it out, but it took me forever to do, too.

I ended up finding that all I really needed to do (besides entering the hex WEP key) was to enter a machine name on the internet options.

My Linksys access point/router requires a distinct machine name before it will hand you an IP address via DHCP, apparently; DHCP works fine now.

Incidentally, I did not have to enter a $ before my WEP key, and this was BEFORE getting the software update.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I went the same thing Simon. I gave up and setup for AirTunes only in which they say ignore the blinking amber light because that would be to extend network or join network. It is looking for IP address. But someday I want to find a way to extend or join the network and use the Internet and AirTunes at the sametime. Is that possible? I have an Airport EBS and Airport EXPRESS. Ethernet to modem to EBS wireless to a iBook,iMac and PC using a  Wireless-G USB Network Adapter. Which all works. But when trying to extend range I am all confused like you were. Can you give me a blow by blow and pics so I will understand. Thxs

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I have a mac and airport and now have the expressOk I can beat you all I reckon on the time it took me to set this son of a b*tch express up. Well I reckon about 15 hours of messing about, 5 of those were after a few beers...Went through Simon's method which almost worked. All went well until hit play on Itunes which then gave error like -3235 for remote speakers. From here it then got really fun. Basically everytime I went to join my current network it looked like working until the hex password which kept flipping back to 40 bit ?? Simple answer is to just change your airport basestation to WPA Personal. F*ck using the assistant to set up express and just go straight to admin utility. From here make all the cosmetic changes to express and then join using WPA. Bingo it works now.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Guess I can call myself lucky. 10 minutes. Once through the Assistant and it all worked. It saw my network, picked the password automatically from my keychain, rebooted, got an IP via DHCP and joined my WEP enabled non-Apple wireless network. Don't know if it matters, but my SSID is not hidden.

I feared the worst after reading this and was very pleasantly surprised!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I'm reading this blog entry, and it sounds like it may work for me but I'm not sure... Here's my setup: - Linksys Wireless G Router (WRT54G) - Two systems wired to that router for internet and file sharing, a Mac G4 (Panther) and a home-brew PC (XP Pro) - Wireless notebook adapter card (WPC54G) in a Dell Laptop - Airport Express that is strictly for streaming audio, connected to stereo in another part of house Basically what I had to do was create TWO networks because APX wasn't letting me join my existing WPA wireless network. I had to get an AP card for my G4, and make that the base station so I could play from iTunes to the stereo... Is what this blog, and the ensuing comments, is saying is that I should be able to manually assign the APX an IP through my Airport Admin utility, and it will work in 'client' mode in conjunction with my Linksys? I'm a bit confused...

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I think I must be the record holder, 12 hours and counting... I've followed everyones helpful instructions, I've used admin to set AX to connect to an existing wireless network, hard coded the IP instead of using DHCP (green light is on!) All seems fine, except iTunes, which doesn't show me the speaker popup, no matter what I try... (i'm a netgear 624 router and AX is displayed under attached devices with the same IP as set in admin) Any help much appreciated.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

This seemed to solve all my problems: http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?14@58.H2zdaqy5vXp.4@.6898fa3f Haven't gone into detail as to what the problem was, just content for now to listen to it working. Hopefully this will help others.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Regarding Stefan's post on September 13, please tell me what you did to resolve the problem! It's the same one I have and cannot solve, even after calling Apple. Thanks, Chris - cajuk@hotmail.com

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

The $ in front of the WEP key sorted me out. Thanks so much for this, I only ended up spending an hour on it!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

It is so true. I was sold on Apple's plug and play - and I have been unable to get it to work do far. Your page seems very good. I hope this helps me out tonight. Also if you could post some screen shots for Windows I will know how to make AirPort Express join existing 802.11b network.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I had similar problems but it was all fixed when I powered down everything including the cable modem, express and my computer waited for two minutes then powered up the cable modem let it link up and then connected it into the express. The green light blinked a few times then went solid and I've been good ever since.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I've been at it now for about 14 hours. I have G5 in to which I just installed and airport extreme. I wanted to make it my base station and so checked to allow it to make networks. I want to wirelessly network to a laptop with an airport express card. Having done this with the machines sitting side by side everything seems in order. No fancy set up. But when I take the laptop 30 feet down the hall into another room, I am out of range? So I thought I could use the airport express I bought to stream music to my stereo too extend my network. I connect the express and am unable to find it with assistant or any of the other software and neither computer sees it either. Not really true. I do have an 'apple network' available but I think I just want to join my existing network. Plug and Play?

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Thanks for the $ tip on the WEP key! Wasted about 3 hours til I found your post.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I don't use WEP or any encryption because it puts a huge overhead on the processor, thus slowing networking. Few people care about encrypting data. To keep my neighbors off my Wi-Fi netowrk, I use MAC address filtering and I hide the SSID. This eliminates passkey problems and speeds up all network activity. If you do choose to use WEP, use a 5-digit passphrase for 40/64-bit, or a 13-digit passphrase for 128-bit encryption which eliminates the need for the $ sign. See Apple Support doc-- http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108058.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

It took me ages to get mine working, it would appear on the airport network list, but kept saying that it couldn't connect to the base-station and so I couldn't configure it.

In the end I remembered that I had the IPnetShareX (Natd software router) set-up and disabling this solved all my problems - now it works great!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Either i'm really stupid or just too tired to see it. Have a linksys 802.11b router hooked up to broadband modem and 3 wireless clients (2 macs, 1 pc). No WEP and not SSID broadcast. No problem with the Express (ha!) when it's on it's own wireless network. I just can't seem to get it to connect to my existing wireles network. Have been at this for 6 hours now. Am I missing anything? Did the manual IP thing, etc. Still, no joy. Any help would be greaftully appreciated

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Happy days (or should that be daze). The damn thing is working - I really do not know how (which I guess is no help to anyone - sorry).

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

hello~ thanks for your review... Can I ask you something?? I'm Korean. I also bought an AE now i can listen to music through the AE but I can't share any file with my friends I heard people using AE can share file with other people without internet... now I'm using wireless internet so I don't need internet share... Could you tell me how to share file with other computers without internet All OS are XP Sp2 Is anybody help me?? please... T.T

Safari and Explorer crash after awhile

Howdy. Has anyone else had a problem with everything freezing? I'm using Airport Express with the D-Link USB adapter. Miraculously, I had little problem with the setup; I couldn't get it to work for about ten minutes. Then I accidently hit the "Assist Me" button in one of the OS X menu windows and it configured the settings for me. Except that it tends to seize up on some pages and crashes the finder as well. Can anyone help me with what the proper settings should be? Do I need to manually input an IP address, and if so, where do I find this. Also, there is no WEP setup....do I need to enable this (and from where do I get the key?) Basically, because I hit the "Assist Me", I don't know If everything is properly configured. I did nothing with the Airport Setup Utility. It has no networks listed (it's all through the D-Link Wifi utility) Can someone provide a step-by-step instruction for setup for this adapter? Cheers, Bob

Safari and Explorer crash after awhile

You might want to try downloading the lastest driver from D-Link for the USB adapter. For Mac OS X it's version 1.3.2 and it fixes that nasty freeze up that I got with the old drivers.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Apple should take note of all these not-so-easy setups and should really revise their setup and supporting material on this product. I also spent several hours trying to setup the AX. In frustration I called Apple support but was still not able to set it up! Spent another hour or so today trying in vain and have decided to return the product. OK, yes I should have read the fine print but I think they need to clearly state that the AX only extends your wireless network from an Apple Airpot Base Station. It will not extend my network using my Netgear router. Not a happy customer.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Mines going back I give up. I've been at it two hours now. I'm gonna buy a 60gb ipod and plug that into my damn hifi!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Found your page after spending an hour trying to get it setup on XP with WEP. "$" in front of the key did it! THANK YOU!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Thx for the blog and comments. I have a Dell D600 with the Intel Centrino wireless setup that is linked to a Netgear WGR614v3 router. I also have a couple of other computers (all XP Pro) joined to the same existing wireless network. I got the AX to share the music with the home stereo. At first I could not get to install the AX so that it will be recognized and joined to the existing network. After reading the blog and comments went to the apple website and downloaded the latest firmware (6.1 for Windows) and the latest Admin utility (4.1) for the AX and then tried again. That worked just fine the first time..Did not have to use the $ prefix for passkey even though I was using 128 bit WEP..Thx

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

It's equally hard on a PC too :( I am using Windows XP and a wireless Netgear router D384G. I had to configure the airport using a wired connection through my router and then add it to my existing wireless network once I had configured it. Also I think I had to use the admin utility not the wizard. I don't have it in front of me at the moment. Will try and post more in the next day or two

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Wow :) I had similar problems to

-- Joe Posted by Anonymous on 23 August 2004 00:59:54 BST

I had to plug some cat 5 already connected to my network into my APEx after resetting it. Launch APEx Assistant, and not make any changes except let it change my settings to DHCP. Then, close it, load AP Admin Utility, do the "create network" hack to set the real ip. Now select "join network" instead. And it almost worked. I never heard the thing about prefixing the WEP passwords with 0x or $ before... but one thing I had learned in past was my D-Link DI614+ on 128 WEP, did not agree with Apple 128 WEP... My solution there was to simply drop to 40 bit, and voila it worked.

Now, here is the real fun part. My APEx arrived in the mail today. I plug it in, I don't have APEx Assistant... So I slap in the CD... "Can't install, newer version exists" Riiiigh. So I call Apple. An hour and a half later he told me I would have to do a clean install of OS X. Like hell, I seacrhed for every AirPort file, and deleted every last one (including the Receipts he told me not to). Slapped the disc back in, installed the older AP 4.0 software. But now software update doesn't work... ARRRRRGGH!

PS: Guess who took credit for solving the problem? ;) The Apple tech of course.

If anyone gets as frustrated as I, drop me a line I'll do what I can to help - cls@clubnet.org

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Good Bless you dude... Thanks to your post I was finally able to configure this piece of junk.. And it took me a whole 5 mintues vs. the several hrs/days trying before...

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Even though everyone else says the same thing, I have to bow down to you for posting this... I've been doing the staple trick for about 2 days, and this config worked the first time!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I might as well add my $.02... I had tried to follow the howto here, but without success. Worked like a champ after reading your trials/tribulations (I imagine you didn't find it so at the time, but it is rather humorous reading...). Perhaps it's the software update, but DHCP wasn't a problem, either.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Follow Up: while I was able to stream music to my stereo this way, I also wanted to be able to use the AX as a wireless bridge for my PS2. The problem is, with the latest AirPort firmware (6.1), the ethernet port is disabled when the AX is functioning as a wireless client. After a morning of searching, I found this a step-by-step HOWTO to get Linksys WRT54G/WRT54GS routers to work with the AX in WDS mode. Worked like a charm. The only thing I would add is to make sure the MAC address for the router that is entered into the AirPort Admin Utility is the wireless MAC address (yes, there are 2 different ones, wired and wireless).

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I am still having trouble with this damn thing! I have a Dell with Windows XP. I can't figure it out and am very frustrated!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I was able to solve the "Problem with your ISP" message by leaving everything on and just disconnecting and then reconnecting the power plug to the cable modem. The green light stayed on and all machines (a G4 laptop, a G5 and two XPs) found the default opening page! My problem is that the PCs do not appear in the network all the time. I have tried changing sleep mode on the PCs, power saver etc but still having random disappearances. I am using Linksys 54G adapters in WAP-PSK mode.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Thank God for Simon G Brown. It's working ! You're aces!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Thanks to Simon and all the other posters who have put up explicit instructions on making AX work. After spending similar many hours trying to make AX work, I did something very simple that made all other insttructions and hints useful .. I UPDATED THE FIRMWARE on my older D-Link DI-614+ WAP. As soon as the firmware was updated and the WAP restarted, all the rest worked as described in Simon's instructions. Should have done this first and made this a 15 minute exercise. When all else fails, look for the answer in a more obvious place. If the AX works for all of the rest of us (even if it takes some work), then it probably works in most other situations. The problem is not necessarily Apple's, although they could extend their assistance to other environments more readily. Thanks again!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Apple... are you reading this? I had a similar experience 8 months back when I tried to join my existing WLAN with my [then] brand new PB - I had to remove security to join my home network. [ I figured that if I couldn't join my WiFi network, then my neighbours certainly wouldn't]. I had to wait for 2 or 3 releases of OS X before I could re-instate security. A comment was made that these issues aren't all Apple's fault - and this may well be true - but the perception is very different. I still love all things Apple but the more popular they become, the more their 'Plug & Play' simplicity is falling foul to compatability issues. They therefore need to test more. A whole lot more.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

This was the greatest find of all time!!! (OK, well maybe not, but it was pretty important.) I played around with this a little bit on a Friday night, and gave up after about 1/2 an hour. I tried again fresh on Saturday when I came across this document. The "$" was the trick, and things are streaming beautifully. I didn't run into the problems with the DHCP configuration, (using a Cisco 1200) so I guess I got off easy on this one. ;)

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Hi there, nice information, found it just googling around to collect some information about the express before (!) I start to play around. The initial configuration was apple-like - 4 minutes - up and running. Beyond believe. Greetings from rainy germany Andreas

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Thanks Simon! I followed all the instructions but had a hard time because Airport Admin Utility did not recognize my wireless network, but when I typed in the SSID name in that field it all came together. Question: If I use only mac filters and not WEP, will my network be as secure? regards and thanks

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

It pays to research what you're trying to do before you actually try and do it. It took me about 15 minutes to get mine from in the box to in the wall acting as a repeater for my linksys 802.11g router, with an alternate profile for acting as a secure wireless AP with its own net connection. I mean, not to sound like a snob or anything, I just honestly mean that it's a huge timesaver to figure out exactly what you want to do, and google the hell out of it before you even start.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I'm living in Italy and was itching to buy airport express. I waited forever for it's availability here in Italy and waited another eternity while trying to set it up....I was just about to pack it up and sell it on ebay when I found your site on google. I'd kiss you a million times over for the advice you provided. Turned out '$' in front of the 128 bit worked magic!! Thanks again!!

Re: 6 hours to setup Airport Express!

Wow...this website was very helpful. It pointed me in the right direction, but I still had to figure out a few things for myself. This will be obvious to a lot of folks, but to the techno-idiots like me, who know nothing about things like encryption, here are a few things I had to figure out on my own: 1. In Admin Utility, "Network Name" = SSID 2. If you have a network that is using "64-bit WEP" encryption, that is the same as "40-bit WEP encryption". 3. To get your airport express to connect to your 64-bit WEP encrypted wireless network, you: (a) must click on the "security" button after entering your Network Name, (b) Choose 40-bit WEP in the drop down, and (c) type in your 10-character password (but it is actually 11 characters because apple products require that you place a "$" before the password). I did all of this with the Airport Express connected to my router with an ethernet cable. Once I did all of this, it worked over my wireless network by itself. phew. 3 days.

Thank you for the $ tip

....finally did the trick! If you're trying configure with WEP (128 bit OR 40 bit)...prefix the key with a $ and you should be set. Thanks much!!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Regrettably, I found your posting 24 hours after my own 4 hours. A simple additional paragraph from Apple would have been nice. The dropped iTunes has been solved by increasing the "Multicast Rate" to 11. I don't have far to send my signals, so distance isn't my issue. The various other solutions didn't solve. Obviously multi-faceted problem, everyone's setup is different, hence different solutions. Thanks for posting this article.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I had to laugh when I read this, you described it perfectly! ahh the good old paper clip got a good work out that's for sure! I also read this after I'd spent a few hours with mine but it helped me finally resolving the issue, thankyou! Mine would not work with my existing wireless network no matter what I tried, worked perfectly as a router but who wants to change networks to print or to play music. Eventually and after reading this I updated the firmware from 6.1 to 6.11 and wullah I saw a green light instead of the mind numbing flashing amber. The 10 or so seconds of the Xpress startup becomes the do I die after playing with this thing for hours, will it flash amber or will it work, each startup and subsequent flashing amber drawing this pain in @rse closer to the toilet. I like the product , now it works!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

F*CK! Thanks to David Hibbs: My Linksys access point/router requires a distinct machine name before it will hand you an IP address via DHCP, apparently; DHCP works fine now. I went out of my MIND! Couldn't get static IP to work, suspected WEP suspected MAC address filtering...turns out my SMC router also expects the client to have a name.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I'm not one for leaving comments on blogs but.... THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU... Definately a few hundred hairs have turned grey trying to set up my Airport Express, but since I found this blog, I can gleefully report that I've stopped cursing and spitting blood. Only took me about 10 hours!!! (over 3 days), bt there you go. THANKS AGAIN

Beside myself with frustration

Four hours and counting. Nothin will make the yellow LED stop blinking. A neighbor's network keeps zapping my AX. Worst of all, I had this working just days ago & now cannot recreate the magic. Terrible documentation, terrible software. The LED was green a few days ago, what happenned? Here's the deal: I do DHCP only. WAP 128 bit security. I want access to this node & my network limited to approved users. I used very strong passwords when I set up the AX the first time.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Took me about an aggregate 8 hours over 3 days - almost threw it out the window. The key was installing 4.1 - and then back dooring through the Admin Utility - no need for $ just use HEX. Thanks everyone - it helps to know you are not an idiot!!

10 Days of Frustration are Over!

Thank you... I am glad I found your page!!. Thanks for the "$" trick. I owe you one Hugo, Dunedin, FL, USA

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

You are not alone. I messed with this over a 3-day period. I have a Linksys WRT54GS, v3.37.6 and a new Airport Express. I put both on channel 1. I put the "$" in front for the AX password and it worked like a charm. I ran the AirPort Amin Utility and named the base station. Under "Airport Network" on the AirPort tab for "Wireless Mode" I put "Create a Wireless Network (Home Router)". Under the Internet tab for "Connect Using" I have 'AirPort (WDS)". I have the MAC Address of my Linksys and Configure: using DHCP and the "Also allow wireless client computers" is checked. Under the Network tab I do not have the box checked for "Distribute IP addresses." Under the WDS tab I have checked both boxes and the selection as "remote base station" for the first box. The Main AirPort ID is that of the Linksys. There is a God!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

And there you go again... I had this thing working too for over 6 months and now that I got a new computer, it all went pear shared. I can t get it to work anymore! Worst thing is that the status light is green and yet I dont see the speakers pop up in Itunes. HELP!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Giving each basestation a fixed IP and avoiding DHCP was the magic bullet for me. AirTunes just stopped working a couple of months ago for no apparent reason. In hindsight I suspect the culprit was a new DHCP server somewhere on my network. Thanks for the detailed info, it saved me a bunch of time.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Thanks Simon! Your blog entry saved my day. I just switched to Mac from Windows XP and was really impressed with how well everything worked, but that was until I started configuring AirTunes. But nafter 3 hours of work and reading this page it now works like a dream. I am using DHCP and just used "AirTunes" as "DHCP Client ID" in the Internet tab of the AirPort Admin Utility.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Simon - you are an absolute living LEGEND! Like many of the people responding to this forum, I have spent ALL day trying to work this 'simple' task out with the so called assistance of the supplied manual. Then I saw you IP setting and now I see green beautiful GREEN. Thanks to all of these people as I truly thought I was going MAD! Thank you thank you thank you - now excuse me as I am going to try find the last 8 hrs that have been taken from my life... not kidding - totally p*ssed that Apple couldn't make this clear and simple in their manual.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

PowerBook with Mac OS X 10.4.2 and one Airport Express using WAP connected to a corporate Windoze network.

My only goal was wireless networking. No USB printer sharing. No music. Three hours down the tubes.

I coaxed the AX to grab an address via DHCP from the server on the corporate Winpooch LAN, but I was unable to get AX to serve IP addresses via its own DHCP server including passing through the DNS servers' addresses.

After getting an IP address from the AX's DHCP server, I was able to ping the gateway, the corporate DHCP server, and the AX only by IP address from the PowerBook, but not by name as no DNS servers were made known to the PowerBook. I was also unable to ping a well connected entity such as cisco.com via its IP address; so, the AX was not forwarding anything to the gateway although it identified it as one. The PowerBook never picked up the DNS servers' addresses when AX served an IP address.

My solution was to turn the AX into an 802.11g only bridge. The PowerBook has two network ports: wired Ethernet and wireless Airport. I shut off its Ethernet port and turned on only its wireless Airport. Because the AX was merely a conduit, i.e. a wireless bridge, TCP/IP configuration was completely under the PowerBook's control.

I was able to tell the PowerBook to ask the Winpooch DHCP server for an IP address through the AX bridge, and that worked well. I did have to set the DNS servers' addresses by hand, but after that the PowerBook runs almost as fast as it does when it is wired into the corporate LAN. By the way, I also had to set the DNS servers' addresses by hand when the PowerBook is wired into that LAN.

That LAN has multiple T3s going to the net, and surfing was subjectively as fast through the AX as it is when wired. Also, tunneling an X Window System session through Mac OS X's ssh client from the net through the corporate LAN and the AX worked well enough to be usable although noticeably slower than when the same is done locally.

I see nothing but woe ahead of me as I still have to configure another AX to serve several IP addresses via the AX's own DHCP server, and turning that one into a bridge won't be enough, but maybe some of the experiences above will come in handy.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Just thought I'd add my $.02. I have a linksys wap54g WAP and the airport express. I am using windows 2K (win 2000 pro) - note the easy setup thing does NOT work on win2k, it doesnt even install it. So I was lost as to what to do - no help online either.. it just says use the admin utility! I was trying to connect to it out of the box wirelessly. What they dont tell you is that you have to physically hook it up to your hub or computer with the ethernet cord directly to make it show up in the admin thing. Once you connect it, it should turn green after 30 seconds or so(if not, hold reset button till it flashes fast ~10 seconds). Then it shows up in the admin utility. I wanted to run the airport in client mode for sole use with my home stereo in the other room. Once you get into the settings, its easy to set it up in client mode. Enter in the dns stuff, choose dhcp or define an IP.. My WAP is on channel 6, broadcast ssid, no wep, but I do use mac filtering. I had to add the MACs (There are two for the airport express - one for ethernet and one for the wireless card I presume. Not sure of both are needed, but I added both anyway). Hit update after that, it reboots, unplug ethernet and it should turn green. If not, cehck your settings carefully. I changed the password as well so it didnt yell at me when I clicked update.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Ditto, ditto, ditto... My biggest issue appeared to be that DHCP wasn't working on the AX, but after trying many many other things, i found a forum with the simple instructions: Use the setup assistant, then reboot the modem. I didn't believe that it would work after everything else i tried, but sure enough here it is. Some one else recommended giving the AX a DHCP client id of whatever the MAC address is of the computer that you set up the modem with... but it appears most modems these days will just grab the MAC from whatever they are plugged into when you boot them up. a frustrating 4 hours wasted... thanks for the assistance offered here!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Hi Simon, I'm hoping you or someone might be able to help me. My AX is configured correctly to the D-Link 54G 128-bit WEP encrypted wireless network I already had in my home, using the "$" key prefix, and my AX shows a steady green light. Also, in the admin utility, my AX appears, and I can see the configuration and all appears to be well. My problem is that the remote speakers STILL don't appear in iTunes. I'd read that with XP SP2, I'd need to disable Windows Firewall, which i did, but it didn't solve my problem. Do you have any suggestions for me? Thanks!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Sabrina - make sure you have iTunes configured to look for remote speakers. I found that I didn't -- very frustrating after spending a long time beating on the blasted Express, finally getting the cherished green light, and then seeing no popup. It's in the preferences under Audio.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Cheers - the $ did the trick for me! Using a Linksys WAG54G with itunes on WINXP. Left the Express to DHCP, entered the full 26digit WEP passkey and put the $ infront of it (so its 27 digits now)... the music is streaming to my living room :-) I had given up before - but this page made me go back to the setup! Thanks for that!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Thanks, Simon for the helpful insights. Following your advice on static IP address & '$' in front of the WEP key, I got the green light to stay on but still no AirTunes. Obviously there may still be some problems with my IP address and/or router address. Any insight on how to specify the correct IP/router address would be gratly appreciated.

Gee, you were lucky!

It took me about twice as much, and I am not happy with the setup still.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Well, coupled with your post, and the Apple forums I finally got my setup working. I've written it up on my site as there are a couple of gotchas I hadn't found documented anywhere else. Just sharing the knowledge!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

This was a great start but I ran into other stuff. It is currently working for a Windows XP, netgear router, WEP 64 bit and data from a mapped network drive from itunes host. NUTSHELL 1) Hook Airtunes directly to open port of router. Never got the Asistent to pick up the base station but my Netgear utility showed it squirting rf. 2) Use the Airport Admin utility. Set up for manual/static and assign the ip like the other computers on your network. 4) set the first key of the 4 as the key. I did NOT need to prepend with $ 3) set it for client and be very very afraid. I found if you screw up the authentication to connect to wireless network you lose compelete communication to device even from direct cable. One must do the reset of pushing in for 10 seconds to set back last settings. NOT password rest. Device has 3 ways to reset.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Thanks! You saved my a$$. I first tried another method I saw on the Apple discussion boards with no luck (it actually worked on my other AX). But the maual IP config is what did the trick for me.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I have the same problem with the speakers not showing up in iTunes. I followed Simon's instructions and have got my 2 new AX's showing a nice steady green on my existing Belkin Wireless network, but no speakers showing up when connected to the Stereo Systems. Of course iTunes is configured to look for them, but no joy. 6 hours later...HELP

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

You rock. I've practically built Macs from scratch, but this verdammt AX had me bolloxed. I read your troubles, applied some logic, and had a green light in less than 10 minutes. Unfortunately that 10 minutes was after nearly two hours.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

configure itunes preferences advanced to search for speakers and air tunes

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

The “green light” has really never been the problem- I was able to get it up by just reconnecting the Ethernet cable from the cable modem. But the set up assistants have never seen the base station. It sees the network fine- but not the base station. I have used the setup utility to enable itunes. I get no airtunes – and no speaker pop up in itunes. Everything has been tried based on Simon Browns static address approach- this is just crazy- Oh yes look for speakers is turned on in itunes. And there is no password protection.WEP Any help would be appreciated. DHiggins

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I documented how to set the AirPort Express with Windows. Hope it helps! http://users.zoominternet.net/~markmcdonald/ApexSetup.htm

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

after another three hours looking at forums and a blog. I have tried everything- hard reboots, all software updated to get latest from apple. I have firmware 6.2 on base station. One thing I did notice is that the subnet address in the "summary" in adm utility is different than that in the internet dncp addressing. Don't get it. I tried a manual addressing per Simon Brown's website which helped others but not me. I loose my internet. I have never had a problem with connecting to cable modem wirlessly after the first set up- always green light so it sees a wireless network.- but now as I try to add functions BAM!- no air tunes, no printing, and the base station just does not show up in Admin utlity. I have to use "other'in admin window just to configure it which I have done over and over. Yes.. "see speakers" is turned on in itunes and enabled in admin utility. Wow I'm really stumped. One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over expecting different results. So yes i am going insane - Any help here would make this a better new year... powerbook g4 1 gighz Mac OS X (10.3.9) firmware 6.2, cable modem connected to xpress via ehternet port.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

have spent most of the day trying to get this sorted. this post helped a lot!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

WOW, I don't know what I did wrong? I had a green light almost immediatly and connected my Dell laptop with Windows ME and a D-Link USB connection in the time it took to install the D-Link software. (the Apple software doesn't even support Windows ME.) I guess occasionally it works OK the first time.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Help! I have a dual G5 and an ibook. The directions in the AE booklet seem to indicate you should simply plug the thing into your modem and it will turn green. Okay, I can print and communicate between my computers with the AE but I can never get to the internet or get the light to stop blinking amber. Like I said, I can print and use itunes wirelessly but not the internet. Doh!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I'm another guy you saved. I thought my AE was broken because it HAD worked. Call SOS Appl but it's the weekend, so I went googling and found your blog. Presto-chango! It works. The net's great and your very kind to have posted your detailed account. Look how many people you've made happy!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

well i havent spent two hours on it, but close!! I'm a windows admin helpdesk guy, and was ocnfident that although i have no experience with Mac OSX, iw would be able to install an airport express in my g/f eMac G4 wihtout hitch. WRONG!! Ok, so the main problem is i am using a Wanadoo LIVEBOX, whihc i can get my XP Pro laptop to connect to fine, but cannot as yet get her emac talking to it. For the time beign, we managed to nick a wireless connection form somewhere else on her road, with no security, but this isn't ideal, i want her to get on to her housemates livebox.
I think that the problem i had was not using the $ prefix. Everything else i followed to the T, including the pairing button on the livebox,(somehting bizarre that Wanadoo put in so only the people who own the thing can connect, even if you know the WEP key.)
i will try this tonight, and post up if it works, failing that, i'll also try this non-DHCP route, giving it a simple 192.168.1.x IP for now.
i have to say, apples although are nice-looking, and im sure if EVERY pice of kit i was using was manufactued by them, we wouldn't be having this problem, but as soon as you introduce somehting non-apple, it all goes belly up, and its the apple thats the hardest to reconfigure. My lapotp, which btw - is a six year old dell latitude, connected in seconds. Sorry Jobs, i'm not convinced!!!!!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

update for those interested...

ok, using the $ preix worked, and its now conected, but alas, further problems persist!!!
its connected, like i said, but reboot the mac and it doesn't connect again, it defaults to the open network i spoke of before, not ideal at all. It seems the problem is adding the WEP to the keychain, now before anyone says so, this is what happens:

i used the assistant to enter the key originally, and it recognises it as a WEP network (this is not changeable, its the way the LIVEBOX does it, WPA would be preffered, but is unavailable, ONLY WEP) and when i reboot, click on the Wireless menu thing on the main MAC toolbar, selct the Wanadoo connection from the list, and it brings up a box saying enter password - fine, however the authentication method in the drop down is set to WPA, and cannot be changed to WEP, so no matter how i enter the password it wont work. This is really stupid and i can't belive that MACs are so damn fidgety, this particular menu is the ONLY way to get the key added to the keychain that i can see.

They're supposed to be a real alternative to Windows, but to be fair, if you need a complete MAC network to get it running i stand by my original claim...

macs are nothing but fancy handbags for the rich and ignorant.

ok, maybe not, my g/f uses it for a lot of photoshop processing which im told is better in mac than windows (i run Photoshop CS2 on my laptop with NO problems but i'll take their word there's something special about macs that mean she HAD to spend an absolute fortune on a crap 1.25 processor).

Ok, my question is...

Anyone know how to manually add a WEP key to a keychain, using a text editor or similar tool?

This is the only way i'm going to get this working for her unless she never reboots her machine, and thats just goddamn silly if you ask me, the GUI is just lacking the options i need.

Help!!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

DJ Death, Did you ever find out how to add a WEP option to the drop down password menu that is set to WPA? I'm having the same problem. Thanks!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

for those who are stumped still - the $ prefix IS mentioned in the airport manual - seems NOBODY actually read that before asking for help.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I HAD an AirPort Express set up perfectly with a base station solely to stream my itunes. Problems kicked in when I changed the config of the base station to remove wireless security (wep) to give others easy access to th ewireless network. I reset the AirPort Express and now seem to be having th esame problems as everyone else. No matter what I do it seems that the two will not communicate ie no green light. The laptop sees the AirPort Express and th eutility happily configures it to join an existing network. Everything goes as it should but still no itunes. Tody I have even updated the firmware of the AirPort Express thinking that would do the trick but no joy. Any suggestions?? Thanks

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

ok Zoner, my suggestion would be to turn WEP, or preferrably WPA, back on. With my particular set up we have a Windows and Apple network, and our Wanadoo router is permanently set to WEP and is not changeable. Reason being, that its the way its done. If you've got Windows boxes trying to conect, they'll find it all the same with or without security, cos in windows its a piece of piss, now the problem you are having almost indefinitely lies with simple configuration.

Try starting again, from scratch, just keep it simple, and use the assistants wherever possible. I found the best way to keep settings saved was to use the drop down menu from the main apple toolbar that represents your airport settings for your airport card, once you have your base station set up correctly, use WPA if at all possible, and remember, its only not working cos of something simple, its ALWAYS something simple. (i recommend reading the mnual to trouble shoot set up problems most of the hints in this blog are actually well documented by apple themselves) I assure you that updating firmware etc etc may help in the long run with glitches, but it aint gonna magically fix any set up problems.

good luck - let us know how it goes mate.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Focus: I need clear, 1,2,3, baby steps walk-through on how to set up “AirPort Extreme” (not Express), USING the AirPort Admin Utility, and NOT needing anything in the AirPort Setup Assistant. The story: I have this iBook with OS10.3 and frim day 1 it's had a glitch of the "Help" quitting. "Application Help has unexpectedly quit." And likewise the AirPort Setup Assistant quits. Don't need advice on that, as way back, I took it back after purchase, got it initialized, OS re-installed, etc, nothing removes the glitch. It's a lemon. Anyway, one year ago (in January of 2005) I got around to wanting my Macs on a wireless network, and wanted to use this iBook as the main computer. Went a PURCHASED the Base, the card, etc. But, I get halfway thru the Setup steps and Help & Setup Assistant quit. After a week of agony trying to muddle through, I just gave up til maybe someday I can get a Mac techie to my house. Finally, only this week, a year later, someone told me the setup can be done WITHOUT the AirPort Setup Assistant, which, along with Help, will quit, mid-process. They told me the setup can be done entirely with the AirPort Admin Utility. That's great to hear. But, the person who told me this charges $100 per hour, even for verbal tips. It was amazing he even that little tidbit slip out. So I'm on my own, wondering how to achieve this great feat, setting up my AirPort Extreme with ONLY the AirPort Admin Utility. I would SO appreciate if someone can direct me to a webpage that has actual "Step 1," "Step 2" procedures. Or, if someone can actually TELL me those steps. Any good Samaritan is welcome to contact me by email at mailbox731 (at) aol (dot) com You can put that together, right? Thanks big-time. PS, I want to add my agreement with the above post where someone said Apple should be ashamed for leaving people in the lurch with such a worthless "manual."

PS re: Airport Admin Utility setup

PS, When I said walk me through the "baby steps" I am SO sincere: I have found a couple of setup advice pieces out there but they don't start with the absolute basics. They all assume you are already somehwere along in the process. Not me: When I open the Airport Admin Utility there is nothing visible IN it, nada, zip, not one thing. Upon launch it opens with "Select Base Station." The field is all blank, and all the popup menus show as greyed out. Only ONE clickable thing shows ANYTHING. The icon of a base, labeled "Other"pops down with "Enter the IP address for the other base station." I am utterly clueless here. Thanks

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Go to apple discussion board and look for my interaction with RichB. This guy knows his stuff. The posts are around Jan 8th 2006. His trouble shooting worked for me FOLLOW THE THREAD- GOOG LUcK

Forget Airport Express Assistant

Thanks for all the tips. I use XP, a Buffalo wireless router, 128 bit hex WEP. Airport Express Assistant is USELESS. Windows users should use the Airport Admin Utility if they want to use anything other than 128bit ascii passkeys for WEP. Lo and behold, in the Admin Utility you get the option of every flavour of WEP (64bit, 128bit, hex or ascii) and I didn't have to use a $ before the key. God help the WiFi virgin, Apple!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Ah, that was halarious <sob> I went through almost the EXACT same steps, but it took me longer than that. I recently (stupidly?) "upgraded" to an imac duo, and am going through it all again (how I found this site), only its not recognized at all, and I have no idea what to do.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Thanks to all above, particularly Simon's initial blog. I spent about 8 hours falling down the same holes. I've got a belkin router, belkin wifi access point, wep 128bit encryption in hex, hidden ssid, mac address filtering on both router and access point. All working like a dream now (airport express -lol, running as part of my existing non-apple wifi network in client mode). Steps were; Factory reset the airport express, unhide wifi ssid, add mac addresses of airport extreme to the router and access points mac address filters, use the airport admin utility to configure the airport express setting internet to manual ip as above, the wifi name and password (using $ as my key is in hex), and, very important, soft reboot the router to pick up the fixed ip address (make sure your manual ip address is in the accepted range specified in your router settings). Hide the ssid again. I also downloaded the latest firmware for the airport express and the admin utility for good measure. Network is green, connects to printer and itunes wirelessly through current wifi, no hanging just perfect.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Like everybody else baffled for ages. I have Powerbook G4 with all my music in i-Tunes. I use a Netgear DG834G wireless router. All I wanted to do was continue to use my Netgear for web access and e-mail, but play my i-Tunes via the Airport Express plugged into my Denon UD-M30. The Airport Express was to serve no other purpose than have my stereo connected to it. The Airport set-up assistant is bloody useless for any 3rd party router. Completely ignore the set-up assistant and go straight to the Airport admin Utility. Select the AE and in the settings is 'Wireless Setup' Your Router should be visible there. Select it and update. Et Voila, green light on the AE, window appears in i-Tunes, select the AE. Music to my ears at bloody last. The AE has joined my Netgear network.......!!!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Out of interest, did you get your Airport Express to join the Netgear's wireless network as a client, or via WDS? I was basically wondering if the Netgear you have supports WDS. The neat thing (well, depending on whether it's useful for you) with WDS is that you can then plug a computer into the Airport Express's ethernet port, and get an internet connection. I've been doing this successfully with the Buffalo WMR G54, at least until the built-in ADSL modem on the WMR g54 started siconnecting every now and then, and also crashing, then refusing to connect to certain web sites. If the Netgear supported WDS, I'd switch in a second. But I'm not sure it does.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Well this is how I fixed a recent steady amber light problem using a DHCP Internet Connection without resorting to static IP..... Unplug the Airport and any attached modem.... Plug in the modem, then plug in the Airport..... While it is starting, hold the reset button in for at least 5 seconds to perform a factory reset...... Hopefully a steady green light should appear after approx 45 seconds...... Go to the Mac, click the airport symbol on the top bar and connect to your apple network.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

The key for me was to update to version 6.3 of the firmware. Once I did that I was able to get AE to join my existing wireless network using DHCP.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Woohoo..finally i have both internet and airtunes!!..spend all day solving the problem.. situation: modem+linksys router, macbook, AE. I was untill now not able to get internet and airtunes at the same time over my AE hooked on the network as client. Airtunes worked on its own network, but not together with internet; speakers simply did not apear, however green light was on all the time. Problem was caused by wrong connection between modem and router. A while ago i plugged the cable from my modem into the LAN port of the router instead of its internet port, this because i read it would make the connection more stable... well that might be, but doing so makesstreaming itunes and internetting at the same time impossible. my advice to people who had my problem: disconnect the modem from the router and get airtunes running..than attache the modem again. hope this is helpfull to somebody! SOLVED: Setting up Airport Extreme with Wanadoo Livebox - third party base station

(Please excuse my lack of technical language/understanding)
My husband has an ibook G4 (the latest as of today), and we spent the usual many hours trying to get him wifi'd to the Wanadoo LiveBox. Nothing worked, inspite of the fact that his ancient G3 was fine and so is my titanium powerbook. I tried all the suggestions here and elsewhere. His new iBook simply did not show any indication of reading the LiveBox, even though the LiveBox seemed to be picking him up ( all this ascertained because we could access the LiveBox config page on one of the other two computers). He was, however, asked for a password, it was always refused, even with a $ or "" or whatever added to the password.

But I found something on a French site that worked. Basically I went to the base station page on my machine, and chose: Configuration, Advanced, Wifi, and chose the option WEP password only. (The default position is "WPA or WEP")
IT WORKED!
Here are the French instructions and comments from the site I found: http://forums.macgeneration.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=3763957

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

can anyone tell me how to set 2 airport stations?I have one working well but the signal is very weak 3 rooms away. I am told that I can augment the signal of the original one by adding another express.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Too many problems to mention. But, bizarrely, everything works perfectly if I DON'T change the SSID from the default one e.g. Apple Network 6fxxxx. Might help some other poor unfortunate.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I've had mine for about a year and a half. It worked intermittently (kept forgetting settings). Took forever to set up the first time. Calling Apple support was a joke. I think the only resource Apple gives their techs is that crummy instruction manual because they were no help.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

After using my airport express with iTunes for the last six months I started up iTunes and no remote speakers! Everything checked out (green light, ping, firewall, admin setup) but no remote speakers. It's time for it to go on ebay :(

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Hello, I finally achieved the green light, however I am unable to join the AE network, apparently due to a password issue? Within iTunes, I have the icon option to stream music on the computer or on the "speakers", but I am unable to select the latter, which is connected to the AE. Does the AE require special speakers? The powered speakers that I plugged in were those I used on my PC.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

i got an ax for my mother a month ago and have still can't set the thing up. they could not have made setting it up any more difficult if they tried.

One Year to Set up Airport Express!

After picking at my AirPort Express for a year, off and on, using both Mac and Windows, I finally got it working tonight. Now I’m streaming music and printing wirelessly from both Mac and PC.

In my case, the secret apparently was to tell the setup assistant that the AirPort Express was connected directly to my DSL modem, even though it was actually connected to the router.

Apple’s instructions for setting up Windows printing are incomplete as well. The instructions at <a href=

Re: Schneller Flughafen

Sorry for the annoying german Trackback. The text is just a summary of my experiences with the Airport Express. It also usually takes 2 hours for me to reanimate my wireless network from time to time. Mostly by doing the mysterious factory reset and switching from manual IP addresses to DHCP and back again. Also I had to use WPA instead of WEP to be able to connect from Windows.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I am sure that most people know this, but I thought I would share my experience just in case. I spent 3+ hours trying to configure my iMac 1GHz PowerPC G4 (2004 model) to talk to Airport Express via Airport Extreme Base Station to no avail. Yesterday, I bought both the Extreme Base Station and the Express. I had my cable modem directly connected into my Base Station, which I thought would direct a wireless signal that the Express would pick up....not so much. I could surf the internet, check email, etc....but all I got from the Express was the blinking amber light of death. The one thing that the guy at the Apple store did not tell me is that my machine needed an Aiport Extreme Card (which it did not come with) installed. So....I went back to the Apple store and bought an Airport Extreme card and installed it. I unplugged the Extreme Base Station and had my cable modem line directly connected to my machine. Within minutes of a the reboot it recognized the Express and now I can play my AirTunes from my computer to my media room with no problems. The Base Station went back to the store, which saved me over $100, as the Extreme cards are only $79. Not sure if this will help anyone with an older Apple, but in case it does....

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Just one note to add:  If you are running 54G with WEP 64, you will have four 10-digit hex keys.  Choose the 40-bit key (as people have already said) and use the first 10-digit key.  Don't ask me why, but this works.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I have been using AE as my wireless router (with ethernet connection to my ISP) + itunes remote speaker for monthes with no pb, with 1 desktop and 1 laptop connected (both Win XP).
Recently, my ISP upgraded me with a new wireless router. I want to set-it as my main wireless network, but I still want to enjoy my itunes remote speaker which can only be granted with AE.
The idea is to add my AE to my existing wireless network.
1-    I reset my AE and try the Set-up assistant. What I need is part of the choice. Great!.. but do not count on it...
2-    I reset my AE and try the Admin Utility. After HOURS trying, I luckily find this blog. Apparently, I am not alone; this page seems to be the place to be! After what (I do not count the number of reset), I do the set-up proposed by Simon (except that I do not have issues with the '$' as my assistant proposes Hex / Ascii option (I guess the blog started with an older release of  the firmware). Looks better : the led is green, and I can see my AE when connected to my wireless network. Unfortunately, I cannot update anymore the AE through Admin Utility (error xxx when I try to connect), and I still cannot find my remote speakers on Itunes.
3-    Some more hours later, I notice user mentioning of firmware release 6.3 for AE. Mine is 6.2 !. lets go on apple web site and ... Yes, it exists for Windows as well ! Reset again AE and upgrade the firmware.
4-    Forget about set-up assistant again. But through the Admin Utility, I just do a simple set-up: 'Airport' tab is set so that I join my existing WIFI network (using the 'Hex' option for WEP password). I keep the 'Internet' tab using  DHCP, and I name my remote speaker in the 'Music' tab. I reboot everything, clean-up my wireless connection and recreate it, AND IT WORKS !
--> for those struggling, make sure first your firmware is up to date, as my previous v6.2 seemed to be buggy ....!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I didn't take a year...but 2 months as I was sooo frustrated setting up the AX as a bridge to the AP. One:If it weren't for Google I would never have found your blog and Two:Every post helped immensely and I was prepared to not allow the AX to win. Yesterday it took less than 45 minutes as my setup is an older HP Pavillon 4900,win xp home ed. I completely removed Airport software then reinstalled using only AX software provided...and Volia! It isn't that easy for many others but I was willing to do whatever. By the way, the AX is a bridge for ps2 in a rear bedroom and it works better than the modem solo. Everyone ....a big Thank You!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Thanks so much for this detailed account. I  finally got everything working. Since so many people are looking here for answers, I'll post the two important steps that I  missed (during the first 8 hours or so !!!) This may be obvious to many of you, but it wasnt to me.

1) you have to have the airport express PLUGGED IN when doing a reset. I was pushing the little button on the AE, but it just didnt occur to me that it had to be ON for it to work. Dumb, yes... but ... I didnt have the docs and it seemed counterintuitive to be resetting while plugged.

2) I discovered by trial and error that to connect from a cable modem to  Airport Express, you have to use a CROSSOVER cable, not a standard ethernet cable  (such as the one supplied by the cable company to go from modem directly to computer) I'm not certain, but I imagine that's true with a standard router set up as well, but again... it just didnt occur to me to use a different cable.  Finally, in desperation, I swapped with an old crossover, and my airport popped up immediately.

Hope this helps!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I tried your advise. It worked for the speaker. But I still cannot get online. The internet connection still does not work. Help. :(

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Eva, please tells us what your setup is....your computer , what wireless router or? Are you using the airport with the A/X? This can kind of help us to help out.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Hi Simon. I use PowerBook G4. Now I have a cable Internet connection (from a motorolla cable modem directly to the PowerBook). I want to make it wireless using the Airport Express.
I have never had any problem with connecting my speaker wirelessly to my notebook through my Airport express but so far I do not have any luck with the Internet connection.
The PowerBook recognizes the Airport Express, but not the Internet connection.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

THANK YOU. Finally working....

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

You all really suck at this i would write a post on how to do it in like 2 minutes but this is much funnier

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I have a thinkpad running XP and a Arris cable/telephony modem from comcast. I installed the airport express following the directions and got a blinking amber light and no functioning internet or airtunes. I then took down the IP address, router address, etc from my modem and manually configured those settings into my airport express, and now I have a green light and am able to transmit music to my stereo, but I can't access the internet. My computer connects to the network but then I can't load any pages. When I try "repair," it fails when reconnecting to the network. The IP adress when I'm connected to AX begins with 10.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express! Bell Sympatico Setup.

Thanks a LOT! Trying to use my wireless PC laptop to connect throught wireless router to Airport Express to control iTunes/printer. All the suggestions helped, had to put in a static IP address using the admin client, have a named device (no '$' required for my 128-bit WEP password). However if anybody is using a Siemens SpeedStream 6520 (standard with Ontario/Canada Bell Internet Service Provider) this is what you need to do. First, once you connect solely to the AirportExpress via Wireless, go into the Airport Admin Utility and write down on a piece of paper both the "WAN MAC address" and the "AirPort MAC address". Then follow these instructions: I had to enter my browser and go into the router itself (e.g. - http://192.168.1.1),  go to "Advanced", "Home Network", "Advanced Settings", "<u><font><u><font color="#a00000">Configure the Local Home Networking modem Wireless Network</font></u>"</font></u><font>. Then click on "Yes - Enable wireless now" and "Next". Don't change anything on the next page (e.g. - SSID), click "Next". Don't change anything on this page either, click "Next". NOW, on this page, there should be checked "Wireless Filter - ENABLE" and "Filter Mode - ALLOW" followed by "User 1" and their MAC address, etc. NOW, refer to the MAC addresses you wrote down, after your last user (e.g. - User 4), type in the next user "User 5", and for MAC address, type in the first MAC address you wrote down, then "User 6", and the second MAC address you wrote down. Click "Next". Don't change anything on this page, click "Next". Click "Finish" on this last page, let your router reboot, and breathe a sigh of relief that you can now wirelessly control your music AND connect to the internet at the same time.

p.s. - I'm not sure if I could have done the normal connection using the Airport Setup Assistant and then changed the router "User" information and had it work, however after spending over a day trying to connect this, I'm not going to disconnect and try it another way. Good luck.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

i bought a new airport express and i am trying to use it to expand my wireless connection. i connect it but the light keeps flashing amber, i don't know what to do.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

This blog is what gave me the ideas to solve my problems with the airpor express too.  I have an XP Pro laptop with a Netgear dg834G wireless router.  When I used the Setup Assistant, I follow the process through to the end, then the yellow light would flash on the AE and my laptop would no longer connect to my wireless network.  One of the problems I found was that the WEP security on the AE only comes in 40 or 128 bit.  My router had been set to 64 bit, so I changed it to 128 bit.  This is what I did to successfully set up my system:

1.  install AE

2. install software

3.  manually set up AE with Admin Utility.  AE didn't appear with admin utility, so use Setup Assistant to the point where AE is recognised.  Go back to Admin Utility and scan, find AE. set up and hard code an IP address, subnet mask, and servers.  setup 128 bit password (no extra characters!).

That was all, it took all of 10 minutes after reading this blog.  I had spent about 3 hours before hand.  Very frustrating.

I hope this helped, thanks to everyone that posted.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Hello there... Looks like I'm a few years behind everyone, but I am experiencing terrible problems. While reading your comments has not helped with my particular setup troubles, it has, at least, made me feel less stupid! Darn manual is worth nothing!! I tried my brother's airport express network, and it worked. I bought an airport express and cumulatively spent about 8 hours over three days trying to set it up. No can do! It finds all my neighbours' networks, but not my network or base station. Returned the airport express to the vendor in frustration. Purchased another one yesterday and had them set it up for me in the store... well, just see if the computer could find the base station both with and without the modem cable connected. It found the base station & was able to hook up to the internet. All that was left to do was set up passwords for the network and the device. Extremely excited, I rushed home, plugged the darn thing in and nisba, zip, zippo! Both base station and network have disappeared without a trace. I search for other base stations & other networks but I can't find either. Aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Oh, am I glad I found this post!!

Spent 3 hours on Friday and another 2 hours today trying to get it to work - just cracked it and its cooking!!
Followed a post by Andrew and changed my current PC wireless network to 128 bit WEP instead of 64, then reset the airport express, went into the admin utility and gave the details of my network, pasted in the hex password, and selected "join an existing network"  Clicked "update" expecting the worst, but got a delicious green light on the airport!  Now streaming music through itunes, and my broadband connection still working at the same time.  I was VERY close to giving up and sending it back, glad I stuck it out!!

Thanks Andrew!!!

No WEP, still problems

Well, I tried the things you'd suggested, but I couldn't seem to get it to work. I could get the express to work with its own network, but not via joining my existing network provided by my airport extreme. The difference is that I'm not using WEP encryption. Instead I use a closed network. I'd had some problems in the past getting roommates' windows computers to connect using WEP, hence the closed network. I had the same issues you describe in viewing the express's network in the airport admin utility. It would not show up despite the fact it showed up in the menu bar. i had to select express's default network in the menu bar before it would appear in the airport admin utility. I went through iteration after iteration of the reset button, airport setup assistant, airport admin utility, resets, unplugs,... it was a nightmare. Eventually, I figured out that if I reset the express and then bring up my airport extreme in the airport admin utility, it would automatically configure the express (which I'd tried before with the message (something like): "Unable to automatically configure the remote base station"). The key was, I had to reset the express to start fresh when configuring the main base station. I didn't get an opportunity to name the express or the speakers, but what the hell. I'm listening to it now, so I don't care. That took hours.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Many thanks for this article! Following your instructions I finally succeeded in getting my AE to join my existing DG834G network and am now able to stream music from both my wireless PowerBook and wired iMac. Couldn't have done it without your very useful advice - so many thanks again!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Thanks to this forum, I finally solved my Airport problems.
It took me something like 5 hours, including discussions with stupid engineers from Apple hotline.
So now I must spend 5 minutes to give you my feedback and how did I solve my problems.
But I still do not know what exactly was wrong before.

My equipment is :
VAIO laptop with Windows XP - pack 2
D-link G604T router with a 64 bit WEP key (10 digits)
Airport Express Base

The target was to have the APX joining my existing network, and after 10 or 20 different attemps, rebooting the APX, I found a solution, with the following procedure :

Download the latest version of the Airport Assistant, which includes 2 softs : the Assistant and the Admin Utility

Use the Airport Assistant to create a new network between the laptop and the APX, which disconnect from the main network. If it works and if you can stream audio to the APX, then :

Update if needed the APX software (soft downloaded from apple.com).

And now open the Airport Admin Utility (more detailed than the first one)and change configuration of your APX. You will have to change some settings :
- select to join a network
- write perfectly the name of the main network to join
- change security settings, and choose 64 bits wep key with hex characters, instead of 128 bits (standard from Apple) then enter the 10 characters of your wep key of your main network, without $

At this stage, configuration was ok, and I updated the settings.
APX connected to main network, which stayed linked to the Net.

GREAT !!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

hi guys. It also took me about two days to configure this crap...it seems my problem was the wep password (thankyou whoever you are!!) and the manuall internet configuration. If you experience the same problem as me (ie. the light switching from green to amber all the time and making Tunes stop etc.) then change both you network settings and airport settings to DHCP. hope to have helped...two more minutes and that thing would've been crashed into my wall..

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Fantastic! With your help I finally got my Airport Express to work with my existing non-Apple netwerk! Strangely enough I did not have to use the $ prefix for my WEP key.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

This was such a useful site that I had to share my experiences in the hope that my message will help others. I have Windows Vista and a netgear router. My AX is working now, as a client from which I can stream music to my stereo system. Here is what I did. First of all - it is only possible to insatll the airport admin utility from the airport express CD. The airport setup assistant will not load. Then no matter how many times I tried, I could not use scan in the admin utility to find the AX. What you have to do is to make sure the AX is configured as a network rather than a client - if you dont know how it is configured perform a factory reset (see apple site). Then connect it to your router using an ethernet cable. Use a program called network magic (free for a 3 month trial - use Google) to look at your network - this will tell you the IP address of the AX. Open airport admin utility - press other - type in the IP address of the AX (xxx.xxx.x.x) and the password - will be 'public' (no quotes) if you have performed factory default reset. This wil open up the configuration tool. Type in the name of your network - exactly as it appears in the network and sharing centre in windows- and your network password (this appears on a differnt tab in the admin utility I believe. I have WPA secity so ytped in a 8 charecter password. If you have WEP, I think you have to preface the pasword with '$' (no quotes). I didnt have to change any other settings but there are other options available eg giving your AX a name etc . Click update. Cross fingers. The light on your AX will go green after about 1 minute. You will then be able to see the option of streaming music via the AX in itunes. Once you have reached this stage you can disconnect the the ethernet cable and unplug the express if you want - it will remember the settings and will go green again once you plug it back in. What an absolute nightmare this was - hours wasted! Now that your AX is a client it will not be possible to view it again in the admin utility - if you ever need to reconfigure (eg if you change routers or ISP) you will need to factory reset the AX and start again. I hope this is clear and that it is helpful - its quite late at night - any questions, Im happy to try and answer.

Anyone know where to get Airport Express Assistant?

Hi, I hope someone can help...I just bought the new airport extreme and hooked it up...no problems, but I lost contact with my 2 Airport Express'. Went to find the original CD, but can't locate them. I've searched the web for the Assistant software but I can't find it. Can anyone help me, this is such a drag. \ Laura

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I've tried and tried to setup AE to stream music from my Wintel laptop. Airport admin utility for windows never found AE.Needed the iBook and your article, but it finally works! Thanks.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Thanks for your help! It´s working like a charm.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I have an APX that has been (virtually) flawlessly connected to a Linksys WRT54Gv2 for 3+ years (including several disconnects during moving with instant reconnection!).

Here's my issue: our new apartment is setup in such a way that I get no signal from the WRT54G in our bedroom. So, I bought (big mistake!) a WRE54Gv1 (range extender) which is a pain in the ass to setup, but if I restore Factory Defaults on the WRT, then connect the WRE, I can connect it to the WRT and extend my network. But, the moment I add the APX to the network, the WRE drops off and flashes red.

I am at my wit's end.

FYI: DHCP and no security (at this point).

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

After being powered up continously for over 3 years, my AX finally died. Has anybody else's met the same fate?

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Awesome! You saved my life. 0x infront and a manual IP-assign did it for me.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Sorry, so I'm not clear on ow to do the set-up. In plan three you said to... There are problems with using WEP passwords, and so to use the hex value. So is this an automatic thing, or do I have to make a new password in Hex? It also looks like I have to prefix the Hex with either $ or 0x, so i just put that before the password. Where is the Internet tab from your screen shot, and are those IP addresses same for all AX or how do I find the specific one.... or are they for the router. I have an AX, iBook, and a Dlink wireless router. Thanks for the help.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Well I have arrived at a most peculiar situation and any help would be greatly appreciated! After a long period of frustration I have succeeded in establishing a network comprised of an Airport Extreme and 2 APXs. The Extreme base station is connected to a router provided by my broadband supplier and the whole thing is now working fine from my main PC including airtunes. So what's the problem? My Windows Laptop PC is unable to locate any base stations when I run Airport Utilities and this is despite the fact that is connected to the network and accessing the internet just fine. Unfortunately I cannot stream music from this laptop as it is unable to find my APXs and as most of my collection is on this laptop, this last piece of the puzzle is very frustrating. I cannot see why this machine cannot see and stream to the APXs when it manages to connect to the network they are a part of! Yours in bafflement Rob

I can't believe that after 3 years this posting is still the most helpful thing out there in getting AX set up! The $ in front of the key and dropping the security to WEP 40 was the answer I never would have found on my own. I gave up on mine for the past few weeks because I was so frustrated and after reading Simon's instructions I finally got that d@mn light to go green and stay green. Thank you! (and good luck to the rest)

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

It's true... Simon's comments (and others here) make it an easy process. Even three years after he posts it AND apple has update their manuals! While Apple no longer issues the "Airport Admin Utility" (was replaced by "AirPort Utility"), the same functions exist.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I need help!!! I bought my second Airport Express and I can not hok it up. Here are the two main problems and I would appreciate some help! I want to have on AE by the stereo and the other by the modem in order to play wireless music to my stereo. I have MS Windows. Problems: 1) My older AE is configured to an old modem I used to have. What do I need to do in order to make it work with the new modem. This AE does not apprear on the list that pops up in the Utility menu and the LED flashes Amber. 2) The new AE asks me for a password (Where in the H do I get that password. If there is any other info I might need to set this up I would TRULY appreciate it!! Regards, Rich

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

well, we took 2 days to set up airport express! apparently the new modem after moving was a telephony modem and we had to reconfigure. we followed your instructions and someones comment on how to reset to factory default and.....IT WORKED! HOORAY! do you want to come over for new years day dinner?? we love you!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I have been trying for 3 days to set this thing up. Still a flashing amber light...

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Bought airport express plugged in used the assistant selected preferences in itunes - advanced - look for remote speakers . wehey open a coldy listen to tunes . or download airfoil & listen to anything on your mac!! 20 mins max ..if that aint plug in and play then what is ??

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Alright, so I got mine in and hooked up in an hour, after being frustrated as hell! I'm running this wirelessly through my home network based off one PC (windows), and a LinkSys router. Here's what I did, taking some advice from posters here and other sites: 1. If you got it second hand like I did do a hard reset. Info on how to do this can be found by simply searching "hard reset airport express". 2. Connect the AX to your router directly via an Ethernet cable. Once you do so, you should be able to bring up the AX in the "Airport Admin Utility". 3. Click "other" in Admin. 4. Use the same IP Address that's given under the AX currently showing up. 5. Use "public" for the password. 6. go to the "Network Tab" 7. Find the setting for using the AX as a "client" from a drop down tab menu 8. Type in your home's network name using exact case. 9. Select the appropriate Security Encryption you're using for your wireless network, whether it be WEP, WPA, etc. make sure you also select "plain" (letters) or "hex" (letters & numbers) for password scheme. 10. Type in your password, or copy & paste it verbatim. Don't bother with the "$" that some are using here. 11. Click update. Wait a few minutes. 12. Now you should have the AX showing up in iTunes. If so, connect everything up to your stereo (this is pretty dang hard too if your receiver is a brute, lol) 13. Enjoy Hope this helps someone out.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

The mistake I made was enabling WDS on the main airport extreme base station - that seemed like the right thing to do, but definitely wasn't. Now that I don't have WDS clicked I have a green light on my airport express and can stream music.

Uneasy to use Airport Express

Similar experiences here, just happily bought an Airport Express, thinking i am used to Apple’s products and it will be a piece of cake. Thinking again, it took at least 4 times reseting and lots of try and errors. The manual was of little help showing to few pictures to illustrate what they mean and not being precise with words. After about 2 hrs + of research the different functions now seem to be working. This almost reminds me of the iTrip, fantastic idea, totally not working quickly in every day use.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Alright peeps! Has nybody tried this with WPA2 (not WPA) and the FIOS ActionTec router? I have been trying for 2 weeks now and no joy!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Frustrating as hell not being able to plug 'n play from the box after much hyped abilities. Tried for several hours attempting to connect to a current WEP enabled Belkin wireless router only to have the AX disappear from view after each setup attempt and getting that lovely flashing amber light. After reading the problems of responders on this forum decided to give up on the WEP security and changed the router to WPA security. No need for the $ precursor to the WEP key or setting the IP address manually. using DHCP no problem. Both MacBook Pro and XP desktop found remote speakers in iTunes easily.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

geez, try two WEEKS to set up one as a base station and the other as a remote with other things hanging off that. in the end, i found out u must use the wizard to set up the remote, there is no way in hell to configure it manually. well, good luck all.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express! (AX)

Here's the Fix for my problem. Problem: Can connect and setup AX on a non-secure network. As soon as I added my WEP 64bit security, it would not reboot my AX correctly and ultimately cannot connect. Solution: By changing my WEP security of my router from 64 to 128bit (10 vs 13 hex) and saving. I hard reset the AX and joined the network with 128 WEP and it worked without difficulty. It updated and rebooted the AX - for now Solid Green light. Yep took me probably 4 hours total of sorting and resets of modem/router and AX. Changing passwords etc. Hope this passes it along. Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I couldn't resist adding some more to this thread. I had a very specific issue myself... I have an Airport Extreme base station connected to a Surfboard cable modem, two Airport Express routers one upstairs and one downstairs primarily to utilize "zoned" speakers with iTunes. I had this working for years by having a lan attached connection from my Windows xp PC to the Main router, and setting up a wireless network with one of the Airport express devices and joining it with the other (yes, you can have a LAN connection and a Wireless connection simultaneously from the same PC. This did the job for years, but when I decided to move my PC and could no longer keep the LAN attached cable, I decided to merge the Airport Base station (also worked with a Dell 2350), and the two Airport Express routers into one big wireless network (802.11g). I used a Netgear USB wireless adapter WG111V3 (though a linksys and V2 netgear adapter had the same results) to connect to the network. Now my problems began, when playing ITunes and utilizing the remote speakers (upstairs/downstairs), music began to cut out every 60 seconds on the nose. It didn't take me long to become very annoyed. I messed with far too much to mention here with no avail. Short version of the fix; START RUN gpedit.msc go to local computer policy, administrative templates, network, QoS Packet Scheduler, properties (by default QOS reserves 20% of your bandwidth in XP, whether you disable QOS or not!) I adjusted it to 10. This alone did not fix my issue. The next thing and what I believe to be the major culprit was the disabling of "Wireless Zero Configuration" in START RUN Services.msc find wireless Zero config, right click, select properties. Disable the startup type, and stop the service. Again this one is supposed to not be used if you elect to not use Windows Zero configuration and go with another network product, but guess what, it is still started and sure as anything used! Every 60 seconds this bugger goes out and kills your bandwidth just to tell you what networks are now in your vicinity, thanks alot, personally I'd rather not have the spike. Hope this helps some poor bloke someday. Though I agree it's not Apples fault (since I am using Windows) I am disappointed that they told me that an Airport extreme, and two airport expresses were just too much for my network and that it wouldn't work at all. Well I am here to say it works just fine, can play ultima online, have two floors of music pumping and call of duty 4 on the Ps3 (Hell we even have a Wii), no more drops since Wireless Zero is out of the picture. Good luck all.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I just cannot get it to connect at all. Windows. Can't even get the screens everyone else has. HELP! Driving me mad, had it for months and have spent days trying -- just can't do it.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I CANNOT get this f#ckign thing to work. Had it for months, tried countless times. Windows, manually connected to airport with network cable, wireless internet. Just can't get it to do ANYTHING. Can't even get the tabs everyone else seems to have. Close to smashing the thing to bits. Total waste of money.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I'm Windows person, it took me 2.5 hours... :) Wifi network was set up before, but stopped working, and i was called to fix the problem. 1. Tried to connect to network - no network 2. Tried to access Airport Express from AE utility - no AE 3. Installed AE utility on Windows machine, searched for wifi network - no network, no AE 4. Reset AE, repeated ##1-3 - no luck 5. Had to disconnect network cable from DSL modem, connect it to AE and ran AE utility to do initial setup of AE 6. Reconnected network cable back to AE, and finally MacBook picked up wifi network. 7. BTW i couldn't find any documentation online about connecting AE first to computer for a setup after reset

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Joe, do you have a software which came with AE? You have to install it on your Windows machine, then run AE utility, plug AE using network cable to your PC and wait until AE gets detected.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I ended up changing my encryption to WPA and it was as easy to set up as Apple's set-up guide said. My router is a Belkin 54g and I have a MacBook, two fixed and one laptop Windows XP PCs. 5 hours messing about then 30 minutes to complete. Cheers Simon - For Sale, One Paperclip, used only 50 or 60 times, needs starightening.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

The bad thing is that the stupid $-problem still exists 2 years later...

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I hate this f*ckin thing! I'm past my 12th hour with this piece of sh1t! i just want it to join my exisiting network so i can play thru darn stereo. It showed up in airport utility - then i entered all the info ie network name, key including $, but nada. Now the light wont stop blinking -- and I;ve reset the AX 10 times to no avail. What the heck am i donig wrong????

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I was the same until I put in a static IP and then it worked just fine. Loving it now.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I've been following this thread for months, and it's interesting that such a simple device can cause such mayhem. I have it mastered except for one thing, to be able to use as a WDS device liked wirelessly to an SMC router/adsl modem. I am pretty sure it's configured correctly, but what happens is that the SMC router will continually reboot when the AE is turned on...not good. It's been months of trying off and on when I have time, but as I think the settings are correct, I'm stuck. Ha! coocoo

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I know I am late to this game, but I am experiencing the exact same behavoir and thus far I have only had about ten minutes where airtunes was available in my itunes, though a speaker connection could not be made. this is what I have so far: I updated to latest frimware on both RangeMax Router and Airport Express. I put all of the devices in my home on the MAC Filter List of the router, including both the Ethernet and Airport MAC ID for the Airport Express. I disabled all security on my Wireless login I then tried all of the following, each time with a reset of the Express, Cable Modem and Router. I can access the AE each and every time I do a reset with the Airport Admin Utility. I tried the "static IP" approach, I was not sure what IP address to put in, I left the address info that came up on the Airport Admin Utility. For the Wireless settings, "join existing network" My home network is never visible, so I type it in exactly as it is set up. Make sure "enable airtunes" is checked Create a base name and password Click "update", the Utility says that the update goes all right, but waiting for the AE to reboot. When it reboots it can no longer see the network, wired or wirelessly. I am starting to think it is the router, but would love some feedback. I turned off all "rangemax" functions in the router. Top

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Use the wireless network software that came with your wireless adapter, disable "Wireless Zero Configuration". In START RUN Services.msc find wireless Zero config, right click, select properties. Disable the startup type, and stop the service. This one is supposed to not be used if you elect to not use Windows Zero configuration and go with another network product, but guess what, it is still started and sure as anything used! Every 60 seconds this bugger goes out and kills your bandwidth just to tell you what networks are now in your vicinity. Worked for me.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I can only echo all frustrations vented in this thread. I get as far as configuring AE manually via ethernet cable. I get the green light and even when i disconnect the ethernet cable it stays green. But can the AE utility then see AE...can it heck. I use WPA Personal and have tried manual IP address and DHCP but it makes no difference. Has anyone else experienced this same thing? I feel my only option is to buy apple support and get them to spoon feed me the answer! Please help if you can.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I join other people in their frustration over this thing (I use PC/Windows XP). Finally, I managed to set up the AE (802.11n) via ethernet cable and it joins my wifi network (via Speedtouch 716 router) as a client using no cryptation (but uses MAC filtering). I use DHCP (have not tried manual IP address). I have updated AE and AE Utility with the latest software versions. The AE shows up on the speaker popup in iTunes (version 8). So far so good. Now, playing an album on the computer speakers works fine but when switching to the AE speaker, the music plays 2-3 seconds and then freeze (also the iTunes music time bar freezes). Switching back to computer speakers, music start to play again. Trying to connect to AE speakers, same problem again - music freeze after 2-3 seconds. Is this a iTunes related problem (I have never used any other version than 8 before)? Or is it an wireless network issue?

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I too spent hours trying to get client mode to work, even after reading and trying all the suggestions above. I would get a green light on the AEx indicating that it was connected, but the AEx was not visible or ping-able from any client computers, the admin utility, or iTunes. What finally got it to work was to set a password on the AEx. I had been trying all along with just the default password, but once I set a different password it worked fine! My configuration is a FiOS Actiontec router with Netgear WG602 access point.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I don't know what I am doing! I just want to have wi fi so that I can access the iTunes store on my iPhone without have to plug into the computer. But I cannot get this stupid thing to work. I may just return it and get wi fi at a Starbucks or somewhere! I tried hooking up the eternet (I think that's what it's called) but then I could not get an internet connection. Do I need a base station? I've had my Mac home computer for about 5 years now, maybe I need something else for wi fi.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

So I struggled with this as everyone else has. Changing the security on my Dlink router from WEP to WPA and then manually entering the IP, Router and DNS addresses did the trick. I did not need the wildcard in front of the password

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

My info upfront: OS- WinXP, Verizon GT704WG Modem/Router. Been trying for 4 days now. Can get it connected to my wireless network, no problem- all DHCP settings are manual, WPA is the encryption. However, the Airport Utility still doesn't find the AEx and Airtunes won't show up. I'm open to any suggestions at this point.....

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I'm on my 2nd day of trying to get this damn device to work and have had trouble wrapping my mind around what needs to happen. I don't want to use the AE for Internet access, I just want to use it to stream music from my Mac to my stereo. And, of course, I'm plagued with the same blinking yellow light and inability to "see" the AE from my Mac. Here's my peculiar situation. I have an ethernet network already in place and want to leave that in place for our PC, Mac, printer, and DSL. Do I have to first configure the AE is if it were an Internet network router in order for the Mac to see it? In other words, when Airport is turned on, is the Mac looking for a network device with its own IP address and WEP and all that stuff which I barely grasp, even though all I want to use it for is to stream music from iTunes?? I can get my Mac to see the AE if I directly connect between it and my Mac by ethernet cable, and I've tried configuring it when it is connected. But since I don't want to use it as an Internet router, most of the config process seems to involve decisions that are kind of irrelevant. It seems like I shouldn't have to bother with WEP passwords and all that if I'm just going to use it to stream music. Or am I missing something?

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I was able to set up just that by connecting the AX directly to my second G3(no wireless)via the ethernet port. First, I installed the Airport utility (it won't see the AX at this time) and then ask it to update thru my existing internet connection. I then disconnect the G3 from the network and connected the ethernet to the AX. The AP utility now sees the AX and gives it an IP address because it now sees my wireless network (it's like a wifi card for my G3) and now i have the options for continuing the setup. I asked it to connect to an existing network and then just filled in blanks and the WEP key (without the suggested $) and every thing seems to work. I then unplugged everything, reconnected my imac the the ethernet, plugged the AX in beside my stereo (connected it to the Tape-in line) turned on Itune 8.02(min w/ QT 7.5.5 min) set prefs to look for airtunes and then a magic button appeared in the bottom right. Sellect the remote speakers and your in business (i hope)

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I'd just like to say thank you. I just moved, and after finding a link to this article I was instantly reminded of how difficult it was to set up my AE as a client to a non-Apple WAP. I remembered using this article to solve my problem at my old place, and once again the information here worked flawlessly. Key points: -use WEP -prefix AE WEP password with $ -configure AE internet settings manually with values from screenshot. Works like a charm every time. Thanks Again.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

I tried to accomplish this (before going to a hard line) with a Netgear Rangemax and I never could get it to work. One thing I don't understand is the reference to the screen shot. The values in the screen shot are not universal, are they? I mean where does the IP Address 192.168.0.70 come from? thanks

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Thanks, Simon. I'd spent a good few hours trying to set an Airport Express up for my brother. I experienced all the hurdles everyone mentions here. Your tips made me realise I needed help. A neighbor (thanks Gav!) gave us the super tip of using a netowrk cable to connect the Airport Express unit directly to the router in order to configure it. Once configured, the cable can be pulled, and the unit re-located if need be. It's then quite happy to work wirelessly. Strange, but true. Many thanks, - Bill -

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

If you have a LiveBox, and Airport Extreme use the ethernet cable to join Livebox to Airport BUT use the RED connection at the Livebox. I spent 5 hours reading the above playing around to no joy and then I swapped the ethernet cable from the yellow port to the RED port it work in a flash!!!

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Jeez, I still can't get this piece of sh|t to work. Unbelievable. How do you find out what the 'other' password you need is???

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Try 8 hours, 7 phone calls to Apple and Comcast, 15 reboots of everything and NO PROGRESS! I have a brand new Macbook Pro and Airport Express WILL NOT CONNECT to Comcast high speed. Same thing with Airport on my new Toshiba. After 8 hours of increasing aggravation I finally got back to where at least my Toshiba connects to the internet via a direct plug-in to the modem (not the Macbook, though). I "switched" to Mac because it was supposed to be user friendly, and two months later had to buy the new Toshiba when the MacBook Pro has problems and glitches with EVERYTHING. I'm disgusted. It shouldn't take 8 hours to set up a wireless that's made by the same manufacturer as the brand new, expensive computer!!!!

5 Minute Setup -- Consistency is the KEY

Like Simon, I battled with this Express for literally 4 days. I am very stubborn and/or insane. Finally, went to see a genius and he configured it for me. However, when I got home it still did not work. I did have a hunch that I could go off and had noticed that several times in the process the WEP key was giving me fits. Here is what I found and after taking these steps it literally took me 5 minutes to get iTunes and my printer wireless. 1) Make sure the password encryption is the same on both your router and your Express. i.e., if the router is set for 128 bit encryption, make sure the Express is the same. My router was set at 64-bit and that is not an option with the Express. As soon as I reconfigured the router to the 128-bit level everything else fell in to place. 2) Plug an ethernet cord DIRECTLY from your Mac to the Express when configuring. Seems stupid simple, but the directions never, ever mention that and I don't see a lot of that direction in any of these posts. 3) Let the Airport Utility Assistant do the rest. 4) Setting up the iTunes and wireless printer required me to go back to the Airport Utility AFTER the Express was configured under the MANUAL option. But it was pretty simple to do that. 5) Put on O Fortuna at midnight to wake up the wife and kids while you are celebrating your genius. Actually, genius probably doesn't apply if a network takes 4 days to set up. Nonetheless, a triumphant moment. Thanks to all the postings on this board. It was equally entertaining, informative, and now cathartic.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

Thanks for this! Being even less computer-literate than you, it took 5 hours total and I almost gave up until I found your post. What a nightmare! Did the same staring at the express to see if the green light stayed on.

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

it took me 5 min. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3695083&#3695083

Re: 2 hours to setup Airport Express!

If you are using Windows to configure your wireless network, then on the Advanced tab of the Wireless Connection properties tab, check the 'Allow other users to connect...' box. This worked for me. Good luck!
