Tiger on Tiger?

Mac OS X Tiger has finally been announced, but the big question for Java developers is whether it will ship with Java Tiger.

Java Built-in
Java has never looked this good. Built in to Mac OS X Tiger is the latest, certified release of the Java 2 Platform. With improved Code Sense indexing and Ant project templates, Java users can continue to use their standard Java packages and build tools coupled with Xcode’s key productivity features.

The latest certified release? After chatting to people in the office, the general consensus is that Tiger will ship with Java 1.4.2 but Java 5.0 will be made available via the software update mechanism. It'd be great if we're wrong but, regardless of this, my order has already been placed. :-)

It appears you are correct though there is no word on when Java 5.0 will be released. I believe a preview version of Java 5.0 was released through the developer connection last year so why it hasn't made final is curious. More info here

Re: Tiger on Tiger?

Kathy Sierra seems to imply that it is Jave 5 in Mac OS X 10.4: http://headrush.typepad.com/creating_passionate_users/2005/04/code_for_head_f.html Maybe the apple site is out of date? Or Java 5 is not the default Java in 10.4?

Re: Tiger on Tiger?

I'd heard that the developer preview of 10.4 included Java 5.0, but perhaps it's not quite yet certified and Apple don't want to hold the release of OS X. Only time will tell I guess.

Building the JDK from source ?

Since we may have to wait another few months for Tiger on Mac, do you think there would be any possibility of building the JDK from source for OS X ? I've downloaded the JDK source from Sun via the JRL (Java Research License), but there doesn't seem to be much help on Google on how to modify the build scripts for OS X Do you think it is even possible ?

Re: Tiger on Tiger?

Didn't take too long. http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/java2se50release1.html

Re: Tiger on Tiger?

Indeed, and it seems to work a treat. :-)

Re: Tiger on Tiger?

Does anybody know how to change the default jdk to 1.5 in OSX? I downloaded and installed 1.5 on my mac but when i do "java -version" in the console i still get "1.4.2".
