Twitter RSS feed for Simon Brown [Twitter] simonbrown: wondering whether Adobe's commercial approach to Flex Builder will limit adoption of Flex ... which will be a shame, because I quite like it

Coding the Architecture RSS feed for Simon Brown [Coding the Architecture] As mentioned before, we were speakers at, and community sponsors of the Software Architect 2008 conference (3rd-5th June 2008, London). This is the first dedicated software architecture conference that I've been to and the majority of the ...

I want better newsreaders

Let's exploit the metadata

For some of us (not the corporate world though!), newsreaders have become an essential tool for keeping up to date with what's going on in the world. I use a number of newsreaders across a number of platforms and while they're slick, I can't help feeling that they could be better. For example...

  • Tag clouds : Lots of feeds include information about the categories and tags associated with their news items. Why can't a newsreader show these? Better still, I'd like a tag cloud view based upon my unread news items so that I can drill in to the specific topics that I'm interested in immediately.
  • Rules : I want to be able to set up rules so that I can rank my unread news items. For example, I'd like to assign a low ranking to news items that aren't in English, or those that mention a specific keyword (e.g. tool, technology or API) that I'm not interested in.

Newsfeeds contain metadata - we could exploit this for a much better user experience. Any takers? ;-)

Re: I want better newsreaders

back durig the blojsom 2 dev cycle (I dont work on it anymore) I put together something I called limber that tried to acomplish the same goals. I filtered feeds based on language, keywords, and even classification. I also started (before I shelved it) a feature that if friends were using it, it would make things important for me that they found important. As an example if dave was reading a blog that I didnt have but it talked abut blojsom, it would get propigated to me.

I think I still have that code lying around

Re: I want better newsreaders

That sounds very cool indeed and I think that the friends/recommendation feature would be especially powerful inside a corporate environment. You not thought of doing anything with this?

Re: I want better newsreaders
