Twitter RSS feed for Simon Brown [Twitter] simonbrown: wondering whether Adobe's commercial approach to Flex Builder will limit adoption of Flex ... which will be a shame, because I quite like it

Coding the Architecture RSS feed for Simon Brown [Coding the Architecture] As mentioned before, we were speakers at, and community sponsors of the Software Architect 2008 conference (3rd-5th June 2008, London). Tweets vs Facebook status updates

I'm preempting a discussion that I'm bound to have the next time I go drinking with other geeks - Twitter vs Facebook for status updates. I prefer to use Twitter because :

  • It has a "remember me" feature so that I don't have to login every time.
  • The user community have created a (now supported) convention where you can respond to other tweets using @username. This makes Twitter a platform for very short, disconnected conversations via the web or ...
  • mobile. You can opt to receive all or just direct tweets to your mobile.
  • It transforms URLs through tinyurl.com to maintain the 140 character limit.

Which do you use and why?

Re: Tweets vs Facebook status updates

Surely the biggest difference is that Twitter is on the Internet and Facebook is on, well, an extranet.

I can't subscribe to or view your Facebook updates unless I have added you as a contact and you have agreed. Whereas anyone can see your tweets.

Meta comment, it'd be very useful to be able to read the post I am commenting on while I am commenting. :-)

Re: Tweets vs Facebook status updates

I use both (updated via moodswing): http://blog.circlesixdesign.com/2007/08/16/moodswing-4/

Re: Tweets vs Facebook status updates

It looks like MoodSwing has been replaced by MoodBlast, which doesn't update Facebook. Either way, I only wish that I could use a Mac for my day to day work. ;-)

Re: Tweets vs Facebook status updates

Facebook has a "remember me" feature now. :-)

Re: Tweets vs Facebook status updates

Twitter can be as unobtrusive as your IM client. I can post new stuff via IM, and get updates of all my buddies streams via IM. I still haven't figured out a way to do something like that with Facebook... until then I will continue to bug my friends to use Twitter.

Re: Tweets vs Facebook status updates

Given the recent purchase of Facebook by Microsoft, I imagine that the more Java friendly path will naturally tend towards the non-Microsoft (Twitter) alternative solution.

Re: Tweets vs Facebook status updates

Hi Simon, have been given your name by Sue Waters. I understand you are getting your students to use twitter. This is something I would like to explore and chat to you about. I am away on holiday for a week so would love to catch up with you when I get back. Cheers Sarah " A week in the life of a newbie twitter" http://tinyurl.com/ytzv4w

Re: Tweets vs Facebook status updates

Hi Sarah - I think you have the wrong Simon Brown. :-)

Re: Tweets vs Facebook status updates

I think Twitter is generally a faster and lighter way to communicate than facebook which I dislike mainly due to the junk content I keep getting. I have recently started on Pownce.com which is as light as twitter but adds fileshare, which is a great feature.
